Mm, hell yeah. You say it took a while for us to get colour TV, and that is true. But at the same time our rate of discovering new technology is actually increasing. A lot of the things you see coming out recently have been held back. USB3? It's been in use for at least two years before we got it. And that's just one example.
Not quite sure if this is a conspiracy or a debate, I'll let the members decide.
But technology is being held back long after it's invented.
Whether this is to stop new things flooding the market, or for profit, who knows?
But what do people think of it?

It sucks to put it simply, people should have access to technology as soon as it's developed enough to work reliably.
The main reasons that technology isn't released straight away include:

  • Profit (as you said), companies want to make what they can before risking investment in new ideas
  • Market Anticipation: Sometimes delaying a product makes more people want it when they here about its existence elsewhere in the world, this was common with games and still is with movies.
  • Safety and Political crap (the safety point less so with virtual technology but none the less) Remember the internet was at first only on offer to the military
  • Public Adoption: just how easy is it for a person to accept this product into their lives, the easier the faster it will be introduced
  • Barriers to entry: Is it expensive or difficult for companies (or the public) to change over to the new format (a common issue with changing game consoles and saving your old saves and games)
  • Competition: Are there any similar products being offered by other companies that beat it to the ground before it even comes out? If so production value is likely to hit the floor also and delay release indefinitely.
  • Demand: This goes hand-in-hand with profit, do people actually want (or can be easily persuaded to want) what's being sold to them? There are people out here who still don't have mobile phones with colour screens or flat screen TVs not because they don't have the money but because it's not worth the cost of entry. While with these two examples the nay-sayers are in a minority with new technology this group is much larger, and can be large enough to put companies off massive scale production for years, if not permanently
So while I'd love to see USB3 the second it came out there are significant factors which stop companies from giving it to us.

I have heard a lot of conspiracy theory's on this that would kinda make sense. One being that all our tech comes from aliens, others being that a fuck ton of stuff is being held back due human fear, that we are developing too fast. (Ye old man against the machine novel thing.) Then there is the whole theory you speak of. Hold it back to get more money... or some shit.

To be honest they make some sense to me.

I mean look at the amount of SciFi novels, films, games and comics that are all based on the fact humanity created things too advanced. All based on the fear of the unknown, technophobia, developing too fast and changing too quick before we can adapt.

So I personally think they are holding back more so we can accept the change easier. Since while some of us are good at adapting to change. There are some who just either can't cope or find it hard.

It's a bit like how the ever lasting lightbulb has already been invented. But they won't release it. Because if they do, they'll be outta business.

But as for USB3 (And SATA III) was probably held back because USB2 and SATA II were becoming a standard format, so there was no compatability for it.

To be honest Microsoft have been on the fail train ever since Gates left. Vista was a train wreck, 7 does things that Windows 98 would be ashamed of (I log crash reports when I'm in 7, and I have a Windows score of 7 and keep secure so it's not my PC), and Windows 8 wants people to link thier live accounts with thier computers and link thier files to the cloud (Source) -shakes head- so much for privacy.

If I read that article correctly, I will not be a happy camper once Windows 8 comes out. I’m better off keeping 7 until they force me to use 8 down the road.

Looks like I'm sticking with my XP / 7 dual boot system for some time.

I'll keep my XP, thank you very much.
And I'll keep my WLM2009, too.
