I wonder what your views are on this obvious topic. Every day you hear, just recently that we're cutting government spending, blah, blah, blah. Well I think this would be a good start.

If you couldn't be arsed reading the Article (I know. The Guardian is a little too much for the lack of intellect from some people... No names... No flaming.) The arguement is:

We should ban all glass (Pint glasses, glass bottles, etc) from pubs and bars. There are some strong statistics that seem to back up the ban. With 300 people in Britian alone, getting "Glassed" [Attacked with glass from said bottles, pint glasses, etc] a week. The NHS is urging people to stop using glasses, and instead switch to a cheap, durable plastic.

In Hull they trailed this out for two years. In that two years the NHS (National Health Service) saved £7,200,000 (£7.2 Million) and that was in Hull alone. Serious/Fatal injuries in pubs/bars in the UK went down by a staggering 53% also! Now with results like that, it's a sure agruement. However, people pay for quality. If they're on a night out, they don't want to be sipping through a plastic beaker, like a child.

One could argue that the pubs/bars in England are breaking the Health and Safety act.

Now the otherside of the arguement is: Why should we change yet again for the stupid oiks that seem to speak for the masses? Why should we pay good money to sip our drinks through a plastic cup?

I personally. Am for the ban. But I'd be intrested to see what other people seem to think of it. Seeing as my last debate topic was completely ignored*. ( Evidently not as bigger deal as I thought it was XD)

I agree. We all love to drink in this country, but some people take it too far. People who don't know their limits, or care. It's a shame we have to go down this route. But it is "Health and Safety." Secondly, aren't knifes and forks going to be replaced with plastic ones? This is a bad idea. Plastic knifes can't cut into shit, and plastic forks break. Way to easily. Mind you one, could argue, that you're least likely to go on a glassup if you're belly is full of food.

This is why I prefer stoned people to drunk people. Stoned people can't be arsed to be violent. (Most of the time).

LOL.
Hull drinkers sound dangerous...
£3.6 million worth of damage to people a year? Insane.

I'd say why not just replace glasses with plastic in 'danger' zones, but then again, people could just move or go further out than their local... Then if they have to drive back, they'd cause even more damage.
Fucked either way.

I believe they have already done this in the sporting arenas around here. I guess serving alcohol in a deadly weapon is just a bad idea lol

They do it everywhere...
Sports events, music festivals. I don't think they'll even sell it in CANS anymore, let alone bottles or glasses.
They don't let you bring in your own booze either, and that is one of the reasons.
Although really they just want you spending a metric fuckton more money there, where one beer costs what a pack would.</exaggerate>

Actually mate, you're not too bloody far off. You can buy a pack of 15 cans for £11.50 - Asda / Tesco and Sainsburys. That's about £1.30 a can. Give or take. I've known places that charge £2 per 440ML can. Which is WAY more than what you pay for them in a pack.

If you brought the pack that'd cost you £11.50
If you brought 15 cans from this fate (fair) it'd cost you £30.

It takes the piss, it really does.
Not to mention that due to all this worry about health and such, they serve it in cups.
Wouldn't be so bad, but the cups probably hold less than 440ml to start with.

Oh I know exactly what you are talking about. Both of you. It's rip off fucking Britian.

But back on subject.

I agree. Replace glass with plastic.

And preferably the 'soft' kind that doesn't break or shatter. Like the kind next to water coolers and such.
Otherwise you'll just end up with the offensive weapons made of plastic instead of glass.

Not really. You could make it out of that virtually indestructable plastic. Which is what they're looking at, for durability.

"Virtually" still carries the risk, but you do have a point. The disposable ones are alright for festivals and whatever, but a pub would need something they could keep. Plus with harder plastic, the options are better, because they could make pint glasses the same shape/design as the actual glasses. Although I guess they'd be pint plastics?

No it doesn't. I've seen them. People have ran 4x4s over them and they've survived. Like my flashdrive!

Chances are if someone is going to spend time breaking on (Possibly with a knife) they'd use that knife in a fight, but it'd take hours for them to break it. Where as glass can be broken in a split second. You can't just smash a plastic bottle over the bar and try and cut someone with it. Or smash it over peoples faces, which is what is happening with glasses.

The material they're thinking on making them out of is: Polycarbinate.

I thought it was a posh word for plastics. Maybe not.

Lawlz, no, its not. For sure. Different plastics have different names depending on their properties and what is in them, like added Cloride atoms for different properties.

That is an ideal plastic to use. Not only will no one be able to destroy them, but people can still, traditionally, take the glasses from the pub for their collection xD Its a common practice. And they will be harder to break then glasses so things like accidents in the pubs will happen less often. It also allows for companies to make collector glasses that are easy to make, by making them coloured.

What is going on here? Just because a few nutcases can’t control themselves, the rest of us have to suffer. What sort of message are pubs giving to would-be drinkers by serving them plastic: watch your back, this place is the haunt of vicious drunks? You're a cute baby, here drink up? What happens next? Will restaurants insist diners only use plastic cutlery in case there’s a psychopath in the room who suddenly gets an urge to stab someone in the eye with a fork?

Beer tastes like cat’s urine when it is drunk out of plastic. It is at its best in glass, drunk out of the bottle if you must but preferably poured into an appropriate chalice, its head admired, the colour observed and the aromas allowed to spiral up your nose as you take a swallow. Beer is not a cheap drink anymore and to ask people to drink it out of plastic in a pub is an insult. It is bad enough at sports grounds but at least there are some compelling reasons for insisting on plastic in stadiums, mainly because of the volume sold. Instead of treating normal people like criminals and ruining their drinking experiences, why don’t the authorities crack down on the actual glassers? Instead of assault charges being laid, make it a mandatory attempted-murder offence for an assault with a glass. And just to underline how seriously the community views such behaviour, throw in a life ban on entering licensed premises.

How am I going to enjoy my Vodka in future? Out of a plastic shot glass? Get real. Drinking Vodka out of anything that isn’t glass tastes like raw emulsion. Vodka is best served from an ice cold glass bottle and when I pay what I pay for a drink, I refuse to drink it out of anything but.

I agree something needs to be done to curb the violence, however plastic glass is less environmental to make and destroy than glass, lasts for less time and because glass inert (chemically balanced) and plastic is not, the plastic glasses react with the drink and change the taste. FYI this is also why Cola tastes better in glass bottles
