EMOTIONAL RESPONSES

For getting emotional responses correct and realistic, you must first place yourself in that situation. Just as every action has a reaction, every emotion causes a different reaction.

Nervousness:

EXAMPLE: Character A has a job interview.

Reply: Character A gets ‘butterflies’ in their stomach, they get a dry throat, their mind goes blank of all thought and break into nervous sweat [On their forehead and hands.] Thoughts such as “What if they don’t like me? What if I am not good enough?” fill their mind, making Character A even more nervous.

VVVVV Correct. When a person is nervous it can trigger any number of responses like the ones listed above. But, depending on the individual, the symptoms can vary from person to person. To best describe what the character is feeling and thinking, think back to times where you have been in a situation which has made you nervous.

Worry:

EXAMPLE: Character A thinks that they have left the door to their dorm unlocked and they think that their things will be stolen from them.

Reply: Character A can’t stop thinking about it. They can’t concentrate on what they are doing because they are constantly thinking about the object of their worry. Sometimes it can cause them to not eat or sleep properly. The individual becomes extremely paranoid and always think the worst scenarios which can lead to uncontrollable anger outbursts. They also have a strong desire to investigate what they are worrying about.

VVVVV Correct. Depending on what the person is worrying about, it can cause any number of responses. The symptoms given above are common to individuals that worry.

Lying:

EXAMPLE: Character A and Character B have just had intercourse. Character A, the female, says that she is on the pill, when she is not.

Reply: Character A can either feel a sense of guilt or excitement, depending on what the individuals personality. Individuals that lie often do so without even realising it as it becomes second nature to them, so they feel little to no remorse for doing so.

VVVVV Correct. But, again, it can vary from person to person, depending on their moral and ethical views and how they were raised. If they were raised to believe that lying is good, then they do not realise how wrong it is for them to do so. If they were raised to believe that it is wrong, then they would feels guilty and remorseful for what they have done, especially if it is to a friend or one that they loved.

Fear/petrified:

EXAMPLE: Character B breaks into Character A’s house and holds them hostage, giving threats and waving a knife around.

Reply: Character A gets feelings of hopelessness and their body takes on the ‘Fight or flight’ mode where their body prepares itself for either fighting or fleeing. This causes increased heart rate, a racing mind [Trying to figure the best way out of the situation to insure survival.] Adrenaline rush etc. Character A could never be calm in this situation. After the situation, Character A is left alive and suffers from Post-traumatic stress disorder. They suffer from nightmares and live in constant fear of it happening again. They become extremely paranoid and lock themselves in their house or they will move away completely.

VVVVV Correct. It is not realistic if Character A remains completely calm, unless it is in their personality to be so in extremely stressful situation. If the Character cannot take ‘flight’ then they fight, so they lash out as part of the ‘Flight and Fight’. If the character gives an outward appearance of being calm, they will still feel scared inside. They would also show feelings of worry and nervousness.

Grief:

EXAMPLE: Character A’s lover has died.

Reply: Character A suffers from overwhelming sadness that they cannot shake off. They suffer dark thoughts and cry frequently. Over a long period of time, they do eventually learn to deal with their loss.

VVVVV How an individual deals with grief is completely different to another. So it is down to the character and their personality. Like a stoic character would hide it, however they would be hurting deep inside. An emotional character would instead outwardly show their emotions so they would cry in public, talk about the person in question and mope about etc.

Depression inc suicidal:

EXAMPLE: Character A’s partner cheats frequently on Character A, and Character A knows about it but is at a loss of what to do.

Reply: Dark thoughts constantly fill their mind [“I’m not good enough.” “I’m useless.” Etc]. They have overwhelming feeling of hopelessness, worthlessness, uselessness that they cannot shake. They feel empty which is often accompanied by an aching feeling in the chest. They find it difficult to smile, be happy or find anything funny. They either don’t sleep much, or sleep to much. Same with eating. They get urges to hurt themselves and constantly think about killing themselves and how the world would be a better place without them.

VVVVV Correct. Depending on the person and the situation, how bad the depression is and how it affects the individual varies. But the symptoms above are the most common in most cases.

How to act under the influence [Drunk/stoned etc.]:

EXAMPLE: Character A has had a bit too much to drink and smoke.

Reply: Character A is not in complete control of their actions and they do things that they would not normally do when sober [Like strip in public, sing, dance, piss in public on a wall etc etc] Speech is slurred [Drunk.]. They are usually light headed; eyesight is bleary or even double. If they have had far too much nausea and even sickness can occur.

VVVVV Correct. Depending on the individual the affects can vary and the amount that can cause these effects differs as well. Like a light weight would only need once glass. Or an alcoholic would need a few bottles.

Insecurities:

EXAMPLE: Character A has acne and they feel very self conscious about it.

Reply: Character A is constantly aware of their acne and has the feeling that everyone is looking at them and can see it, even when they do not notice. They also feel that people are making fun of them behind their backs. They want to do anything to get rid of their insecurity.

VVVVV Correct. Again, depending on what they are insecure about, it can vary how they feel and think about it. Some can even become extremely paranoid about it, hide in their homes and have surgery to correct the problem. Some people have it so severe that they commit suicide.

Surprise/Shock:

EXAMPLE: Character A jumps out of the bushes to startle Character B.

Reply: Character B momentarily freezes before forming a response.

VVVVV Correct, in some cases. It really depends on the character themselves. Some may react in a violent manner, some may exclaim in surprise. Some may even fall back onto their arses.

Lust:

EXAMPLE: Character A is in heat.

Reply: Character A can only think of one thing and one thing only. And that is sex. The individual becomes overwhelmed with feelings of want and need for the pleasure to curb their lust. So Character A tends to like it hard and fast as well as many partners.

VVVVV Depending on the person and how they react to their feelings of lust. Put yourself in that situation and think about how you would react and deal with it.

Sadomasochism [Giving/receiving pain]:

EXAMPLE: Character A, the ‘Master’ beats the shit out of Character B, the pet.

Reply: Character A gets sexual enjoyment from hurting Character B. Cries of pain and the feeling of power and dominance bring feelings of pleasure and turns on Character A. Character B feels a rush of pleasure from pain inflicted upon them by Character A. Character B gets excited about being dominated over.

VVVVV Correct. Although the degree in which it excites them [Like one Pet might like being cut while another just likes punching.]

Cheating:

EXAMPLE: Character A is cheating on Character B with Character C.

Reply: Character A is overwhelmed by feelings of guilt and remorse.

VVVVV Correct, although it will vary from person to person. Some people even find it a fetish to cheat on their partners so it is down to your character but the symptoms [[ Here is a whole list of hints: http://www.cheating-...arningsigns.htm ]]

Rape:

EXAMPLE: Character A is being raped by Character B. Character B is very good at what he/she does.Character A does not want this treatment and pleads to him/her to stop.

Reply: Character A ends up begging for more and even comes back to Character B for more.

XXXXX Doesn't happen, lovies. for one thing, that character has been violated in their most vulnerable state. Everyone feels vulnerable when naked, and thus this also plays on the mind. Rape is also a form of psychological warfare and more often than not, it is a form of control.

When Character A is being attacked. She/he will lose herself in the rush of emotions that follow. For a short list, what usually happens is a sense of helplessness will overtake before fear, anger, resentment and even hate take over. Once the character has dealt with those emotions, the sense that everyone will do the same will overtake and thus push them to withdraw for a while. Then you have the psychological impact of such actions. Nightmares, flashbacks, the unwillingness to put themselves through such an ordeal again. Thus making the character weary of everyone and ensuring that any relationship will have that added factor of fear, weariness, and the desire NOT to relive such an experience.

In a few cases, Stockholm syndrome can and does also play a part. When kept in a hostage situation for more than 4 hours, the mind degrades. The usual things that someone would not accept to happen become acceptable. They become numb to what is going on around them and thus may even seek out similar treatment to ease the panic of being alone.

Types of Rapists/rapes [Only a few that will most likely be seen around the University.]:

Gentlemen rapist: Is a rapist that is generally known to the victim. This kind of rapist tends to think that they are in a relationship with the victim, as well as think that the rape is actually consensual sex.
Malicious rapist/Opportunist rapist: This kind of rapist seeks control and dominance over their victim. They are usually not known to the victim. This kind of rapist is usually violent and tends to hurt the victim. They are also usually serial rapists, carry a weapon and have a pattern to their rapes.
College Campus Rape: This is where the rapist tends to tie themselves down to raping their victims on the College Campus, whether they are visitors, students or teachers. Mainly students.
Date Rape: A rape that happens while on a date, whether they have been on dates before or on their first date. This rapist tends to be a gentlemen rapist and known to the victim.
Corrective Rape: Where the rapist rapes a woman lesbian in an attempt to ‘cure’ her of her sexual orientation. Can also work the other way around.

Stockholm Syndrome.

EXAMPLE: Character A has been kept prisoner by Character B for more than 4 hours, put him/her through some horrifying ordeals. Character B then makes a slight change and shows an ounce of kindness by allowing them to use the bathroom, and may even become gentle in activities, such as sex.

REPLY: Character A notices the kindness and thus attaches themselves to character B.

VVVVV That's right! Stockholm syndrome forms a emotional link from the hostage to their captor. In many cases, the hostage/victim will defend and may even end up loving the captor and do as asked when asked.
